How it all began...

The modern Games are inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD, over a thousand years ago. During the Olympic Games, universal sacred peace was held, and all wars and other acts of violence were forbidden.

Only freemen of Greek descent were allowed to participate as competitors (foreigners, slaves, women were excluded), and anyone (except Greek married women) could watch the games. For women, separate running events were held during the Games. The contestants competed naked to avoid cheating and to show the beauty of their bodies.
